A guide to the post-merger products from HP/Compaq

SERVERS

IA-32-based servers
Old HP brand: HP Netserver, HP Server.
Old Compaq brand: ProLiant.
New HP brand: HP ProLiant.
Future development will be based on Compaq's ProLiant. Exception: low-end tc2210 and tc2100 products remain HP server brand. Server-attached storage, rack options and systems management will migrate to ProLiant.

Itanium-based servers
Old HP brand: HP Server.
Old Compaq brand: ProLiant.
New HP brand: HP ProLiant.
Both companies had similar IA-64 server road maps. Future development will focus on the original HP strategy.

Risc-based servers
Old HP brand: Superdome.
Old Compaq brand: AlphaServer.
New HP brand: TBA.
HP will follow existing plans, which include two more upgrades to each vendor's Risc processor and then a migration of both high-end Unix server families to Itanium, at which time a new brand is slated to emerge.

Fault-tolerant servers
Old HP brand: NA.
Old Compaq brand: NonStop.
New HP brand: HP NonStop Server.
This is the Himalaya line that Compaq acquired from Tandem. HP has no equivalent server family.

Blade servers
Old HP brand: HP Blade Server.
Old Compaq brand: Compaq ProLiant BL.
New HP brand: Both.
ProLiant BLs will be aimed at data centres and HP Blades at telecoms space.

OPERATING SYSTEMS

Unix
Old HP brand: HP-UX.
Old Compaq brand: Tru64.
New HP brand: HP-UX.
HP-UX has a larger market share and broader customer base. HP-UX is slated to absorb Tru64 features such as RAS, clustering and file systems.

OpenVMS
Old HP brand: NA.
Old Compaq brand: OpenVMS.
New HP brand: OpenVMS.
OpenVMS is the operating system for Compaq's NonStop fault-tolerant servers, a product line that HP didn't offer.

STORAGE

Storage architecture
Old HP brand: FSAM.
Old Compaq brand: ENSA.
New HP brand: ENSA.
Compaq's Enterprise Network Storage Architecture (ENSA) has better name-recognition and architecture than HP's Federated Storage Area Management. Also, a Compaq official said that the ENSA name is easier to pronounce.

Storage brand name
Old HP brand: HP Surestore.
Old Compaq brand: Compaq StorageWorks.
New HP brand: HP StorageWorks.
The catchy StorageWorks brand dates back to Compaq's pre-DEC days.

Storage software
Old HP brand: HP OpenView Storage Area Manager.
Old Compaq brand: SANworks.
New HP brand: HP OpenView.
HP OpenView Storage Area Manager is tied closely to the HP OpenView network management system. HP's Unix market lead also boosted the OpenView brand. Compaq's storage management offerings will become part of HP OpenView Omniback.

Enterprise arrays
Old HP brand: XP family.
Old Compaq brand: StorageWorks EVA.
New HP brand: Both.
HP's XP line, OEMed by Hitachi Data Systems, is a monolithic array family and has mainframe connectivity. Compaq's StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array is modular and focused on open systems. EVA will be developed for midrange and entry-level storage over the next few years.

Midrange arrays
Old HP brand: HP VA.
Old Compaq brand: StorageWorks EMA.
New HP brand: Both.
By mid-2003, HP plans to transition midrange storage to Compaq's EVA platform. Meanwhile, HP VA will be used for HP-UX environments, and EMA for Tru64 and heterogeneous environments.

Entry-level storage
Old HP brand: HP Disk Systems.
Old Compaq brand: MSA 1000.
New HP brand: MSA 1000.
HP plans to offer its heritage storage boxes for at least 18 months, but sales will focus on Compaq's MSA 1000 to exploit the transition to ProLiant IA-32 servers. In the next few years, HP plans to transition to the EVA platform.

Nearline storage (tape)
Old HP brand: Surestore.
Old Compaq brand: StorageWorks.
New HP brand: StorageWorks.
Future offerings will be based on Compaq libraries for high-end and midrange storage, and on both Compaq and HP offerings for autoloaders and low-end libraries.

NAS Old HP brand: Surestore.
Old Compaq brand: StorageWorks.
New HP brand: Both.
The Compaq line will be aimed at the entry-level space and HP's Surestore at the midrange and enterprise markets.

Storage virtualisationOld HP brand: SANlink.
Old Compaq brand: VersaStor.
New HP brand: VersaStor.
HP's SANlink in-band virtualisation is its StorageApps acquisition. VersaStor is Compaq's out-of-band technology. SANlink is shipping now, and VersaStor is due to ship at year-end. SANlink will be migrated to the VersaStor name.

HP plans to transition its business desktop PCs to the EVO line in nine to 12 months because of Compaq's greater market presence. HP will keep the e-pc name for its line of mini desktops.

New HP brand: HP EVO.
Same strategy as the business PC products.

Consumer PCs and notebooks
