Windows 10 overtakes Windows 7 in UK

Statcounter claims Windows 10 now has more than 25 per cent market share

Windows 10 is officially more popular than Windows 7 in the UK, according to data from StatCounter.

The market tracking tool claims that in June, Windows 10's UK market share jumped from 25.05 per cent in May to 27.43 per cent this month. Over the same period, Windows 7's share fell from 25.51 per cent to 24.71 per cent, suggesting it is no longer the country's most-used OS.

On a global basis, although the decline of Windows 7 and boost in popularity for Windows 10 is also taking place, like in the UK, the latter OS still lags its predecessor by a long way. Windows 10 had a global market share of 19.92 per cent in June, up from 18.16 per cent the month before, while Windows 7's global share fell from 39.34 per cent to 38.2 per cent over the same period.

The news comes as Microsoft announced that its Windows 10 Anniversary Update will become available on 2 August. The vendor claims that more than 350 million devices are now running the latest OS, which was offered for the first time as a free upgrade, an offer which expires on 29 July.

The Anniversary Update contains new features which Microsoft claims will help users become more productive and stay safer online.

It includes specific enterprise security features, Microsoft said.
