Logicalis CEO Bob Bailkoski sets 'aggressive' net neutral target for the MSP
The partner boss detailed its scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions objectives, how it plans to achieve them and why he wants to see more channel partners collaborating on this
Logicalis Group CEO Bob Bailkoski has described his company's efforts to tackle its carbon footprint as an "aggressive" drive to target the largest emissions category, scope 3.
Scope 1, 2 and 3 are categories for the various types of carbon emissions a company creates in its own operations, and in its wider value chain.
Scope 1 covers the GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions a company makes directly (from burning fuel in our fleet of vehicles).
Scope 2 emissions are caused indirectly when electricity or energy purchased by an organisation is being produced (heating and cooling buildings).
While scope 3 includes emissions that are not produced by the company itself, and are not the result of activities from assets owned or controlled by them, but by those that it's indirectly responsible for, up and down its value chain.
Speaking with CRN, Bailkoski laid out the MSP's net zero mission.
He said the group, which operates across 27 countries, has an agreed global target to be neutral across scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025.
And that the company is currently assessing its scope 3 emissions where the bulk of emissions sit in the supply chain overall.
"We're lucky that in our supply chain, we deal with big organisations like IBM, Microsoft, Cisco and they have their own goals about how they're going to get to a carbon zero position over the course of the next few decades," Bob Bailkoski said.
"What I want to do is, once we've got that information about our supply chain in the scope 3 piece, is set a very aggressive target.
"Because, for me, I'm well aware that the life cycle of chief executives that have the longevity of decades are rare.
"I don't want to set a target that's too far out of reach from a timeline perspective for scope 3, because it's easy to wash your hands of it and have somebody else pick up the challenge.
"So, as I say, our objective on that is probably going to be something quite aggressive like neutral by 2030."

How will Logicalis achieve its goals?
The easy answer is to say it's straightforward to get to a net zero position by simply buying carbon offsets such as planting trees from some far flung part of the world.
That's the view of Bailkoski, who added that carbon offsets, justifiably to a certain extent, have a bad reputation.
Sticking with his tree planting example, he explained this method of generating more oxygen lacks longevity given several factors affecting a tree's life cycle.
"Every organisation that sets itself a target has got to focus on reducing emissions," he stated.
"When I think about what we're doing at Logicalis now and up to 2025, for example, we are switching all of our building energy consumption to renewable sources.
"So rather than having an electricity contract with a third party provider and letting them choose the source of electricity, we're specifying that we need renewable sources for our electricity that powers our buildings.
"Otherwise, two thirds of the world's electricity generation comes from the burning of fossil fuels."
The group boss added it is also introducing travel policies, company car policies, and other actions in areas Logicalis controls in scope 1 and scope 2.
"And that could be a combination of things like introducing electric car policies, which we have done for parts of the business around the world," he said.

"But also looking at the company car policy that we have in some parts of the world today and trying to find a way to make sure we limit the business travel that's done in classic petrol or diesel based vehicles too.
"But what we're doing overall is trying to reduce our emissions as much as possible, and then in the second and final stage, we'll look at what the residual is that we aren't able to properly reduce and if we end up having to go for some carbon offsets aspects to the plan, we will only go with accredited ethical carbon offset plans."

‘We must work together'
Bailkoski spoke with CRN sister-site Channel Partner Insight in July to discuss environmental sustainability and what he wants to see more of in the channel on the subject.
At the time he said he wanted partners and vendors to work towards having consistent goals across the channel, a message he retained five months later.
"No individual order within the entire value chain can achieve anything without working in partnership.
"My big call out to customers, vendors and even our competitors is, let's work together to achieve our carbon emission reduction plans.
"It's the only way that we're going to have the maximum impact on the goals that we have from a carbon reduction perspective."
He believes vendors are on the same page around this, adding that they're trying to find partners that agree with them, and have the capability to have an impact too.
"It's when it comes to channel partners working together that people are unsure of what to do," he said.
"But I'm perfectly open to the idea of sharing what we are doing in terms of best practices and learning from others."
He added:
"But I'm also keen to advertise what we're doing to help our customers on their journey too. I really think this is something that's so much bigger than all of us that there's no point in me keeping secrets about how we're helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals.
"If we share that sort of stuff amongst ourselves, and people adopt it and do the same thing for their customers then the output from a world perspective will be so much better than just me, keeping my secrets to myself."
