What has been your business highlight of 2022?

There have been so many great highlights this year for the business; however, a key highlight for me personally has been that of becoming a governor at Barnsley College this year while also managing my existing business. To have the ability to use my skillsets to help contribute to the lives of the younger generation has always been a goal for me. As a governor this will allow me to add new skillsets but also help others outside the SHI organisation to be the best and truest version of themselves.

If you were ruler of your own country, what law would you introduce first?

Equality for all! While I wouldn't want to be a ruler of a country in any instance, I would ensure that the country is as diverse as possible while having laws that ultimately ensure equality for everyone.

Which channel or tech leader (outside of your own company) has impressed you most in 2022?

I'd have to say Hayley Roberts, CEO of Distology. Her viewpoints are aligned to that of my own. Her work ethos, drive and passion for others while also driving change and raising awareness is commendable.

If you had a warning label, what would it say?

"Warning: I'm loud and Proud. Get over it!"

What was your first job?

My first ever job was surprisingly when I was five years old! I would carry a tool belt with tools around for my dad and the other mechanical engineers as I travelled with my dad for work before going to junior school in South Africa. Everyone would get together and give me a small brown envelope pay packet at the end of each week with any change they pulled together to thank me for my help. While not an official job, it's my fondest memory but also gave me a good footing for the future in understanding the value of contribution vs reward.

What was the last book you read, and was it any good?

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. A brilliant read and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.

What's the most important lesson you've learned from another business leader or mentor?

I'd have to say it has been to never underestimate the power of persistence, resilience and patience. I've had so many great mentors over the years who have guided me in one way or another to be the best version of myself. Always pushing me forward to keep going no matter the situation in life or business.

Who would play you in a movie of your life?

I think I've said this several times: Charlie Chaplin and Mr Bean combined! My life has been like a silent movie comedy sketch: anything that can go wrong will go wrong. However, through resilience I always have a smile and keep moving forward. Those who really know me know how clumsy I am but also know how life for me has been many ups and downs. In every way I wouldn't change it for the world.
